Crown Molding ProfileClick here to have a look at our most recent addition to our crown molding selection, SoSimpleCrown™ crown molding.

Crown is the wood molding that is attached to both wall and the ceiling. The molding itself is attached at a 45 degree angle to both of these surfaces. It softens the 90 degrees angle where the ceiling and wall meet. In general, a higher ceiling will require a wider crown molding than a lower ceiling.

Since a crown molding is attached at an angle, it also requires more skilled cutting to install properly. Crowns can also be installed in layers, for example, with the decorative part of a base molding showing beneath a crown molding to add extra dimension to moldings. Crowns can also be used in mantles or over doors, where a more elaborate look is warranted.

Modern day trim and molding are still influenced by classic Greek and Roman architecture. Crown molding is defined as a molding that covers the intersecting point of the walls and ceiling. In the development of the early designs, today's crown molding would have been considered a part of what historically is called the entablature.

Mainly used in living rooms and dining areas, crown molding delivers a high level of finish to any room. Whether you choose to go ornate or simple with your style selection, a stunning effect can be created by adding crown molding to the often overlooked ceiling areas of your home.

Crown molding provides not only decoration, but also creates a gentle transition between the walls and ceiling. The ninety degree angle is softened by the crown molding, which attaches at forty five degree angles to both, the ceiling and wall surface.

With most applications, a higher ceiling will translate to a wider crown molding. It is important to pay attention to your trim sizes, as you will want to maintain a proportional design in most cases.

Along with width, when selecting a crown molding, wood type and profile must be taken into consideration, as there are a variety of wood species and a seemingly infinite amount of profiles available from which to choose.

At a reasonable cost, the installation of crown molding will not only add personality and character to any room, but also add to the value of your home.
